ADT is the one of the largest security companies in the world and it has now adding a range of health and senior monitoring to its regular security options. For the health services, the company offers a single product with a one-year contract and initial startup costs.

The nice thing about ADT’s service offering is that you can tie any and all monitoring together. The company currently offers emergency health alerts, home security, video surveillance, fire and smoke detection, and CO monitoring.

The ADT Medical Alert System uses the typical three-step process that’s standard for the industry:

  • Step 1
You press a help button, the pendant detects a fall, or one of the other alarm systems is tripped.
  • Step 2
ADT tries to contact you through the two-way intercom on its base unit.
  • Step 3
Emergency response or other medical services are dispatched to your area. For some dangers, such as fire or CO detection, ADT will immediately send help while also trying to contact you through the base unit.

How to get started

When you sign up for the service, you’ll setup a time for ADT to send over a technician to install the unit for you. This may come with a $75 charge for the installation. If ADT doesn’t have a service technician in your area, you will still may face a $50 activation fee for the self-installation.

Monthly charges start at around $1/day and you’ll may need to sign up for a one-year agreement right off the bat. Adding protection for a second adult with another pendant is a one-time charge of $40 for the device plus an additional $5 per month. The company doesn’t charge you for repairs or replacements, however.

The company offers you a couple discounts depending on what services and memberships you have:

  • AARP members receive a 20% discount on installation and up to $2 off the monthly service cost. AARP members also get a free additional pendant to monitor another loved one.
  • Existing ADT customers get a $50 installation and their monthly monitoring charge starts at $29.99 per month.

ADT says that its base unit is designed to work with a traditional home phone line but that it also has equipment that works with a VoIP or DSL phone line, though it recommends having the technician talk to you about any potential service disruptions. The company says it has some 3G (cellular) options but these are limited and you’ll have to call the company directly to learn about 3G support in your area as well as costs associated with this setup.

ADT Call Centers

ADT is based in Florida but has multiple call centers that are operated 24/7, four of which are always connected. The company owns its own call centers and will route your call to the nearest open center.

ADT says that its technicians will answer quickly and are fully certified, though it does not specify the training that call center reps have. Reps answer the call or alert within about 45 seconds.

Call center workers are available to help users with warnings such as low batteries and then can help the owner with replacing the battery or plugging the unit back in.

Additional Monitoring Options

Since ADT operates a wide range of services, it allows customers to combine other detections to their medical alert service.

The company currently offers a package that, for $48 more each month, includes:

  • burglar alarms
  • fire and smoke
  • carbon monoxide (CO)
  • water detection (flooding)
  • temperature

These services can provide a welcomed sense of protection for seniors living alone. Most medical alert competitors don’t offer the same type of protection.

This makes it a big selling point since seniors are more susceptible to CO poisoning and may not be able to react quickly in the event of a fire.

Common Questions

“What happens if the power goes out?”

The base unit will automatically engage its battery backup whenever your power goes out. This battery will last 12 to 20 hours. When the battery charge gets low it will send out a signal to ADT to let them know, which can get you help in case of an emergency.

“What if I am on the phone when I need to use my pendant?”

The medical system will cut off your current phone call and send the emergency signal if you’re already on the phone. If there’s any issue and the call fails to go through, the pendant and base unit will sent out a loud noise to let you know that the call has not gone through.

“How long is a typical medical monitoring system agreement?”

The company requires a one-year contract to start, though you can change it if you’ve got a “life-changing” circumstance such as a severe illness.

“Does the medical monitoring system come with a guarantee/warranty?”

All devices come with an unconditional warranty on parts, labor and service. You will never be charged for repairs to the unit.

“Who does the medical monitoring system installation?”

The installation of our medical monitoring systems is done by an ADT service technician. You may need to install it yourself if no technician is available.

“How often does the unit need to be serviced?”

The unit needs no regular servicing and it will routinely run self-diagnostic services.

“Should I test the unit periodically?”

The medical alert system should be tested at a minimum, monthly.

“How large is the pendant?”

The company says the pendant is small and lightweight, whether you wear it on the wrist or neck.

“Can I wear it in the shower?”

You can wear the fall alert system and the pendant in the shower.

“Does the pendant work far from my home?”

It has a range of roughly 300 feet.

“What happens if I drop it?”

Test the unit immediately to make sure the medical alert system is working properly. If it is not, the unit will be replaced at no charge.

ADT had to pay California residents a court settlement because it raised rates after the initial year without noting that in contract terms. This has been changed but may make some consumers uncomfortable.

Final Recommendation

ADT offers one of the most robust services around, and it’s great for the whole home protection that it offers. It’s one of the biggest security companies around, so you’ll get decent protection and a quick response to your calls for help.

The discounts are also nice if you’re already using an ADT system or are a member of the AARP. The downside is that it will cost you more upfront and you can’t cancel at any time.

If you like ADT, it’s a good program for you.
