LifeFone is a medical alert company that has been around since 1976. In that time, they have grown into one of the most trusted companies for monitoring and medical assistance. Their systems work by using a combination of a base unit and/or mobile unit and waterproof pendant or wristband.

It is recommended that people look into a number of things before choosing a medical alert system such as the company’s reputation, equipment, contracts and features. LifeFone is a company that has a great reputation, easy to understand equipment, and outstanding features.

Products

LifeFone offers four different options for those interested in their packages.

The packages start at $24.95 per month, and there are monthly, quarterly and annual plans that may alter the monthly price.

1. At-Home Landline Package + Optional fall detection

The At-Home Landline package from LifeFone has been designed to give users more independence and keep them safe in their home.

Each base seamlessly connects to the call center 24/7. The unit has a range of 1300 feet. The base unit has a 32-hour battery in the event of a power outage, and battery life for all pieces, including the base, pendant and wrist band, are monitored by LifeFone.

This product relies on the landline of your home and has the following features:

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • Easy do-it-yourself installation (explained below)
  • Range of 1300 feet from the base
  • 32 hour back-up battery
  • Your choice of a waterproof pendant or wristband
  • Notifies family of emergency situations
  • Lifetime price and equipment guarantee
  • Remote phone answering through the system
  • Free spousal monitoring
  • All batteries, including base, wristband and pendant batteries, are monitored by the call center.

Optional: Fall Detection:

You can add automatic fall detection for just $5 per person, per month. The Fall detection protection will automatically send out an alarm to the call center if you fall while wearing their special pendant.

  • Range up to 1300 feet from base unit
  • Waterproof pendant
  • Note: Though the system is very accurate, no system can detect falls 100% of the time. Since this is the case, the system pendant also has a help button like the other systems, and can be used in the event of any emergency.

The 5-step setup is:

  1. Plug in your Base Unit to a wall outlet. LifeFone recommends that you place it on a sturdy table or nightstand so that it won’t accidentally fall and become unplugged.
  2. Plug your LifeFone Base Unit into the phone jack in your wall or on your phone system itself. The Base Unit will come with a phone line already plugged in so you’ll be sure that it is in the right place.
  3. Plug in your phone handset into the Base Unit in the plug listed as “Phone” on the back of your unit. This is located near the on/off switch and is clearly labelled.
  4. Switch the LifeFone Base Unit “ON” with the switch located on the back of your unit.
  5. Press your pendant or watch button to test the system. You’ll hear a loud signal that will serve as a test, and this signal will be sent to a Care Agent to let them know you’re just testing the unit. After this test, any click of these buttons will send an emergency signal.

Now you’re good to go.

To use the system, it only takes three steps:

  • Step 1 – Summon help from the LifeFone base, pendant or wristband.
  • Step 2 – The highly-trained operator will see your personal information, including health information, and can speak to you through the base unit.
  • Step 3 – Help is sent directly to your home. If medical help is needed, LifeFone will also contact family or other people you designate to notify them.

Prices:

  • $29.95 per month when billed monthly
  • $27.95 per month when billed quarterly
  • $24.95 per month when billed annually

2. At-Home Cellular Package (No landline needed) + Optional fall detection

The At-Home 3G Cellular package is similar to the At-Home Landline package except you do not have to have a landline in order to use it.

This unit works by connecting to the AT&T Cellular Network. It features a range of up to 1300 feet from the base unit, and has a 32-hour back-up battery in the event the power goes out. Speaking of batteries, all batteries, including base, wristband and pendant batteries, are monitored by the call center. The base unit has a microphone that is highly sensitive, and the volume can be adjusted by the user.

Features include:

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • Easy do-it-yourself installation
  • Range of up to 1300 feet from the base unit
  • 32 hour back-up battery
  • Works with the AT&T Cellular Network
  • Free spousal monitoring
  • Ability to move the system to a new location
  • High/low temperature sensors

Optional: Fall Detection:

You can add automatic fall detection for just $5 per person, per month. The Fall detection protection will automatically send out an alarm to the call center if you fall while wearing their special pendant.

  • Range up to 1300 feet from base unit
  • Waterproof pendant
  • Note: Though the system is very accurate, no system can detect falls 100% of the time. Since this is the case, the system pendant also has a help button like the other systems, and can be used in the event of any emergency.

To use the system, there is a simple three step process:

  • Step 1 – Press the button in the case of an emergency, or anytime you need assistance. The signal is sent via the cellular network to the call center, which is open 24/7.
  • Step 2 – The trained operator will have access to your emergency contact and health information, and they will summon help for you. This can be medical personnel or simply a friend or family member.
  • Step 3 – Help is sent directly to your home. If medical help is needed, LifeFone will also contact family or other people you designate to notify them.

Prices:

  • $34.95 per month when billed monthly
  • $32.95 per month when billed quarterly
  • $30.95 per month when billed annually

3. At-Home and On-the-Go GPS Package (Optional Fall Detection)

Another option that LifeFone offers to their customers is the At-Home and On-The-Go system.

This is a GPS-based system that can seamlessly connect to the call center through the AT&T 3G cellular service. Since this is a GPS system, it can used both at your home or away. You don’t need a landline or cell phone service for this system, and the system does not use any of your cellular time. It has a base station for home use, and a GPS mobile unit, so it’s like getting two systems for the price of one.

Features of this system include:

  • Easy to use and install
  • Up to 600 feet range from the base unit and mobile advice
  • Up to 350 feet range from the mobile device.
  • 24/7 access to the call center
  • Waterproof pendant or wristband
  • Mobile device
  • 32 hour battery back-up for the base station
  • 24 hour battery back-up for mobile device; mobile device works while charging!
  • Free monitoring for your spouse

Optional: Fall Detection:

You can add automatic fall detection for just $10 per person, per month. The Fall detection protection will automatically send out an alarm to the call center if you fall while wearing their special pendant.

  • Range up to 600 feet from base unit and 350 feet from the mobile unit.
  • Waterproof pendant
  • Note: Though the system is very accurate, no system can detect falls 100% of the time. Since this is the case, the system pendant also has a help button like the other systems, and can be used in the event of any emergency.

This is an easy to use system that can be used in just a few steps:

  • Step 1 – Since you have access to the base and the mobile device, when trouble occurs, simply press the button on either device and become connected to the call center. The wristband and pendant can also be used to reach the call center. The fall detection pendant will detect when you fall and automatically connect with the call center.
  • Step 2 – The operator will receive your medical and personal information, and talk to you about what is happening. They will either send medical assistance or contact friends, neighbors or family to help.
  • Step 3 – Depending on the situation, if medical help is needed, the call center will inform your family of the situation.

Prices:

  • $39.95 per month when billed monthly
  • $39.95 per month when billed quarterly
  • $36.95 per month when billed annually
  • Fall Detection will cost you additional $10/month

4. All-In-One Pendant (Wearable base unit)

LifeFone offers their All-In-One Pendant for both Home and On-the-Go protection. The pendant is actually a small mobile base unit, so it has a built-in help button with 2-way speaker in it. The pendant also features fall GPS tracking and optional fall detection all within this one tiny unit.

Since this system features GPS, you can use this unit in your home or anywhere else in the US. This system offers the latest in 4G connectivity and works anywhere in the US using their cellular service. Broad nationwide coverage is available using either Verizon or AT&T networks. Here are some of the features of this package:

  • Easy to use and to install
  • Two way speaker in the pendant
  • Long Lasting Supervised Battery – Lasts up to 30 days
  • As with other LifeFone systems, this one is also water resistant so it can be worn in the bath or shower.
  • Optional Device Location Finder allows approved responders to access your GPS location using text messaging services
  • Fall Detection is available for $5.00 per month which is among the lowest in the industry. Battery life with fall detection is 5 days
  • All of their consumer friendly policies apply to this, and all their systems:
    • No Activation Fees or Equipment Fees
    • 30-day Money Back Guarantee
    • Lifetime Subscriber Price & Equipment Guarantee
    • Cancel At Any Time & Pay Only For The Time You’ve Used

You can easily use this system in just a couple of steps:

  • Step 1 – You will have access to both the base and the mobile device to contact the LifeFone call center. You can also use the pendant or wristband. The system will automatically contact the call center if it detects a fall (while wearing the fall detection pendant).
  • Step 2 – The operator will immediately have access to your personal and medical information and talk to you about what you need. Medical assistance or family will be dispatched to your side.
  • Step 3 – If medical help is needed, the operator will also contact your family to inform them of the situation.

Prices:

  • $43.95 per month when billed monthly
  • $41.95 per month when billed quarterly
  • $39.95 per month when billed annually

Additional Services:

Fire/Smoke and CO Protection

With the LifeFone Complete Home Package, you will get all of the benefits of the medical alert system with the addition of monitored fire, smoke and carbon monoxide (gas) detection.

This system will automatically monitor for these items and call emergency personnel in the event it detects a gas leak or a fire. It’ll also play a noise to alert you in an attempt to wake you up.

You’re not facing any specific equipment costs with this package, but you will need to properly install these items yourself. You may want to find help since the company recommends that you install them on the ceiling or high on a wall.

Thankfully, you also get additional help buttons to mount so that you can ensure an emergency signal is sent in the event of a fire or gas leak.

This service requires a one year contract and has the following features:

  • 24/7 medical alert monitoring
  • Monitored fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide (gas) detection
  • Low battery signal
  • Wall mounted help button
  • Free spouse monitoring

Price:

$42.95 per month (for annually payment)

Check In Services

LifeFone also offers check in services to users for a small monthly fee:

LifeFone Activity Assurance – $6 per month

This service is available to users of the At-Home Landline Package. Each day at a time the user sets, the base unit will generate a tone. This tone can be stopped simply by pressing a button on the console. This will tell LifeFone that you are home and responsive. If the subscriber doe not respond to the tone within 15 minutes, a representative will call the user.

Note: Not responding to the activity reminder may not necessarily mean that the subscriber is having an emergency; it may mean that he or she is not at home and forgot to let them know. For this reason, before they send emergency responders to the home, it often makes sense they will call a family member who may know whether or not the subscriber is home.

The user can choose the time of day the service contacts them, but if you have this service and plan on going out of town, you will need to contact LifeFone for suspended service. LifeFone recommends separate emergency care instructions and a lockbox with this service, two things described below.

LifeFone Daily Check-in Call – $19 per month

Another option for those who use LifeFone services is the daily check-in call service. With this service, a friendly care agent from LifeFone will contact you by telephone each day. You can customize this call based on your needs. For instance, if you need a reminder to take medication, they can call to do this. The time of the call is pre-determined, and can be suspended if you are away from home.

Accessories From LifeFone

LifeFone offers a number of accessories for their customers. Lock boxes, for instance, are one option that a person has.

These boxes can hold a key that will enable someone to get into the home if you cannot unlock the door. Additional pendants and wrist bands are also available for purchase. Additional cCharging stations for mobile devices, including a car charger, wall mounted help buttons, surge protectors, DSL filters and beaded lanyards are also available. Ensuring that equipment is top-notch is one part of choosing a medical alert system, and these accessories help to enhance and improve services.

LifeFone Personalized Emergency Care Instructions

One thing that sets LifeFone apart is the in-depth personalized care instructions that the service provides to emergency personnel. When you set up the service, you’ll give LifeFone a laundry list of information including:

  • allergies,
  • doctors,
  • family members,
  • entrance plans,
  • medical history,
  • medications,
  • preferred hospitals,
  • and more

These plans help LifeFone determine who to call in the event of an emergency. You’ll discuss when to provide family members information and who to contact in a variety of non-emergency situations.

I have used LifeFone for over 5 years and am well pleased. There have been multiple occasions when I have had to contact Lifefone via my lanyard due to falls. They can talk with me when I am in any of the rooms in my large condo. Lifefone has enabled me (age 90) to continue living independently.

My sisters and I got LifeFone for my Mom after she had a minor stroke. Although she is in good health, she was unsteady on her feet. She lives very far from all of us, in a rural area, and we are all relieved that she has the LifeFone in case there is another stroke or other emergency. The Lifefone staff was very patient with my mom to answer questions. I would highly recommend this service.

Appreciate the helpful customer service at Lifefone. I set up my dad with this service 2 years ago and they’ve been quick to respond when he needed help, and also have checked in to make sure all of the components are responsive and working properly. It gives peace of mind to know that he will get the assistance he needs quickly, while he is still living on his own most of the time. I’d definitely recommend Lifefone to anyone looking into this type of service.
