Medical Guardian is one of the top medical alert companies on the market thanks to its ease of use to bring emergency assistance directly into your home. This company offers a single-button system, three-step process, that can bring peace of mind to anyone who has limited mobility or other health concerns.

The company offers a state of the art alert system that users can activate via a button on the base unit, or by using a button that is worn as a necklace or wrist band. There is also an option to add-on fall-detection services that will automatically contact the call center if the user falls.

The company has a reputation for offering no fee service, including no activation fees and no long-term contracts. More than one person can use each system for no additional cost, but an additional alert button will need to be ordered

The company has a 24/7 call center that is staffed with 911-certified employees who can assist their customer each time they call. This service also allows their customers to call in for non-emergency situations when they do not need an ambulance. Then, they will contact friends or family to help.

 

 

Products

Medical Guardian currently offers five different packages for customers.

All packages are based on the most common needs of seniors, and none of them require any long-term contracts. Installation is free and customers only have to pay for the service itself, which is paid through a monthly fee.

1. Classic Guardian -from $27.45 per month

The most common package from Medical Guardian is the Classic Guardian system. This system works with your home phone line or Internet-based line to connect to the call center.

 

 

 

 

The base needs to plug into a power outlet in order to work.

The Classic Guardian package includes:

  • No long-term contracts or activation fee
  • Range of 1300 feet in any direction
  • Your choice of a waterproof necklace or wrist pendant
  • Easy set-up and installation
  • Emergency contacts are kept on file
  • 32-hour back up battery in the case of a power outage
  • Optional wall button

To use the system, there is a simple three step process:

  • Step 1 – Press the button when help is needed. Buttons are available on the base station, through the watch or pendant or through the optional wall button. This sends a signal to the Medical Guardian call center.
  • Step 2 – The operator will speak to the user through the base station. The staff is highly trained and will expertly assist you with any emergency. They can also contact any person on a pre-determined list such as family, friends or neighbors, if emergency medical assistance is not needed.
  • Step 3 – If a person is unresponsive or needs medical intervention, the Medical Guardian staff quickly sends help to the home of the user. After emergency services have been dispatched, Medical Guardian will contact family members on file to inform them of the emergency.


 

2. Home Guardian – $34.95 per month

The Home Guardian package helps to keep you safe in your home and protects you from medical emergencies, fire, home intrusion and home accidents. This unit uses a cellular connection through the AT&T cellular network that plugs into any electrical outlet. The base unit seamlessly connects to your waterproof necklace or wristband, and the range is up to 600 feet from the base in any direction.

 

 

The Home Guardian Package includes:

  • No long-term contracts or set-up fees
  • Range of 600 feet in any direction
  • Your choice of a wrist pendant or waterproof necklace
  • Emergency contacts kept on file
  • 30-hour back up battery in case of power outage
  • Optional fall detection device

To use the system, there is a simple process with only three steps:

  • Step 1 – When help is needed, press the button on the base station, pendant or watch. This will send the signal directly to Medical Guardian.
  • Step 2 – The operator will begin speaking through the base station. Remember this is a highly trained staff member and can assist you with your needs. They can also contact a pre-determined person such as your neighbor, family or friend if medical assistance is not necessary.
  • Step 3 – If unresponsive, or a fall is detected with the fall detection device, the Medical Guardian call center will immediately dispatch assistance through emergency services. They will also contact family members to inform them of the situation.


 

3. Mobile Guardian – $39.95 per month

If you are someone who is on the go, you can also choose the Mobile Guardian package from Medical Guardian. This unit connects through a wireless connection, which is ideal for those who do not have a traditional phone line. This unit uses the AT&T cellular network, so a good connection will be required for this system. Since this is a mobile device with GPS technology, you can take it wherever you go, including vacation or visiting family out of state.

 

 

 

The Mobile Guardian package includes:

  • No installation fee or long-term contracts
  • 350 foot range
  • Your choice of a wrist pendant or waterproof necklace
  • Leather carrying case
  • Easy to use
  • Emergency contacts are kept on file
  • 30-hour back up battery in the event of a power outage

This system is also very simple to use and takes only three steps:

  • Step 1 – Press the button on either the base unit or the pendant. Since this is a GPS unit, the tracking system will engage and send a signal to the Medical Guardian team along with the message that there is an emergency.
  • Step 2 – The operator can be spoken to through the mobile station, and you can ensure that the staff member you speak to is highly trained to assist in an emergency. This person will also contact your pre-determined contact, such as friends or family.
  • Step 3 – Assistance will be sent immediately if you need it, whether in the form of medical assistance or simply help from a family member, friend or neighbor. If emergency assistance is needed, Medical Guardian will contact the family members on file and alert them about the situation.


 

4. Active Guardian – $49.95 per month

The newest and best package from Medical Guardian is the Premium Guardian package. This package comes with the most technologically advanced advice on the market. This is a GPS-enabled device that can be used both inside and outside of the home. In other words, it’s like taking a base unit with you, wherever you go. The unit connects through the AT&T network OR you home WiFi, it is lightweight and comfortable.

The Active Guardian package includes:

  • Wearable 2-way Communication
  • Precise Location ID Using WiFi
  • No activation fees or long-term contracts
  • Travels wherever you do
  • Water resistant
  • 5-day battery life
  • Automatic fall detection for additional $10/month
  • GPS tracking capabilities

This system is also simple to use and takes only three steps:

  • Step 1 – Wherever you are, simply press the button on the unit. The GPS technology will kick in and a signal will be sent to the Medical Guardian call center that help is requested.
  • Step 2 – The operator will speak with you directly through the device. This is a staff member who if very highly trained and capable of helping in any situation. They will contact a friend or family member if medical intervention is not needed.
  • Step 3 – If medical attention is needed, or a fall was detected, the operator will send emergency personnel to your location. They will also contact family members to let them know that you are requiring medical assistance.


 

5. Family Guardian – $79.95 per month

Family Guardian uses three, in-home safety sensors. This enables family, friends, and caregivers to stay updated on a loved one’s health and activity levels throughout the day. Plus with the Family Guardian app, you’ll receive instant notifications right to your email or smartphone.



 

Common Questions

As with most products, consumers may have questions about the Medical Guardian alert system. Here are some of the most common:

“Where are operators for Medical Guardian located?”

The primary call center for Medical Guardian is located in Syracuse, NY, but provides localized emergency and non-emergency service to all 50 states. Their second center is located in Union, NJ, but again, provides localized emergency and non-emergency service to all 50 states. Both centers operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their service will never be outsourced, and is accessible across the country. There are more than 200 different languages spoken at the call center.

“How much does Medical Guardian equipment cost?”

There are never up-front costs for equipment. With accessories (ie. wall buttons, multiple buttons or lockboxes), you simply add $2/month on per additional accessory. The only time a fee would be added for base equipment is if the equipment is not returned following cancellation.

“Can I cancel my Medical Guardian service?”

Yes, you can cancel at any time. You will not be charged for cancelling, but should make sure to send any equipment back to the company in order to avoid fees.

“Will monthly fees go up over time?”

Medical Guardian locks in their monthly rates, and they guarantee that the price you sign up for will remain as long as you keep the same monthly package. It will never increase for the same package.

“What range does the base device have?”

The range depends on the system. Depending on the system you choose, Medical Guardian ranges can go from 350 to 1300 feet. Premium Guardian is a wearable two-way communicative device, so technically the distance is unlimited.

“What happens if my power goes out?”

There is a back-up battery on all Medical Guardian base models which will last 24 to 32 hours depending on the unit you have.

“Does Medical Guardian offer a warranty?”

Yes, there is a lifetime warranty on all equipment from Medical Guardian. There is an additional warranty available for $5/month called the Medical Guardian Protection Plan. This covers loss, theft, and all non-normal wear and tear—complete insurance on the device itself.

Final Recommendation

The Medical Guardian service is a reputable and professional company that has made a name for themselves in the medical alert field very quickly. Some users don’t quite understand the technology that goes into these systems, but it is some of the best around.

The company offers a number of packages that meet most budgets, and they do have add-ons that can be attached to any package. There are very few downsides to Medical Guardian, though as with any company, they may not be the right choice for everyone. Since there is no contract to sign, however, it may be a good option to give them a try if in the market for a medical alert system.

    The customer service was prompt The only issue I had was when I was trying to get the product delivery expedited, the website didn’t clarify that you had to order by a certain time of day to get next day or 2 day delivery. I was hoping to get my dad set up before I had to head out. Once I didn’t receive the item by what I thought would be the delivery date, I called customer service and they credited me the extra shipping cost I paid for.

    I like the fast response. However I find it is not all that easy to cancel a call as I am setting it off too often. Concerned about “radiation” wearing all the time.

    Very convenient. I am new widow and live alone . I added fall indicator too. My children are very relieved and remind me to put it on. I spend time now with my son in Kentucky and this was one of the few that could be used in both states.

    System is very good. The rubber or plastic wrist band on the watch style actuator causes irritation on my wrist.

    I haven’t needed to try it yet. However, evidently my dog hit my pendant and set it off accidentally one time. I had 2 calls very quickly cause I didn’t recognize the number and didn’t respond to the first call. Thankfully, the fire dept and others were not called before they talked with me.

    I had this installed for my dad who lives alone a few months ago, and even though we have have never had to use it in a fall, he has accidentally pushed the button a couple times while changing his shirt. The responder was fast to ask if everything was alright and was glad to hear it was just an accidental push. Very nice customer service also!

    Very helpful sales person when I had questions. Medical Alert system works as stated in advertising brochures and online. Gives me confidence that my mother has assistance at all times within her reach.

    I’ve had the device for about a month and had problems with it twice! A clip on the back of the first one broke off; the second one would never light up while charging or blink while I wore it. A third one is on the way.

    I researched the “medical alert” systems with fall detection, and Medical Guardian had the most reasonable approach to everything in my opinion. It’s cell phone based (currently AT&T from what I’ve read), so that it can travel with you. It’s guaranteed for life, so if something happens to it, they’ll simply send you another one at no cost. And they said the monthly fee will never go up.

    The only reason I didn’t give it a full 5 stars is that the fall detection feature has gone off once for no reason. It was sitting on the dresser while Mom was almost finished changing clothes, so she scrambled to try to cancel it in time, and that didn’t work either. When the responder called, she explained it was an accident, and she said they “reset it” for her. Anyway, it upset her, because she doesn’t want to “bother” anyone, and she’s not very good at scrambling anymore either.

    If an accident only happens once a month, that’d be great so she doesn’t have to test it, because she doesn’t really want to bother them with a test either. 🙂

    Otherwise, it’s given Mom some additional confidence, and it’s given us some peace of mind. That alone is worth every bit of the ~$2 per day that it costs.

    So far everything has been working for my father. The only thing that doesn’t come through all the way is the emails alerting me that he pushed the button. The text in the email is cut off.

    you upheld your part of the transaction, it was I who saw the futility of my need for your product at this time. I had fallen 4 times and became afraid. but I quickly got a grip on how to overcome my dependency and decided to return the item. then u charged me ten dollars return postage. that is what hurt

    We are very pleased with the Medical guardian for mom. She loves it and it is the perfect size to wear around her neck. She loves it and we purchased the all in one system with GPS. We also have fall protection and the insurance for it too. The family os grateful that she has it because it gives everyone peace of mind. Medical Guardian if fairly priced. Check it out! They are helpful and will answer any questions you have. Everyone in the family said it’s a very wise investment for mom.

    My husband and I have faith that when we’re in distress that Medical Alert will provide us the necessary help needed. I heard wonderful things about Medical Alert from friends that was the only reason we became customers. We’re getting older and just want to be protected when necessary.

    It isn’t what I expected. I thought the part handing around the neck had a speaker to talk to…..My dad can’t wear the necklace and carry the box. Not what we wanted at all.

    My mom already had a similar product from a local source but we switched to this brand because we were told we could take it with my mom when she rotated between my house and my sisters. Well, changing the contact number proved harder to the ‘team’ than expected! After the fourth person they got it, or so I thought, but when we tested it they still had the wrong address! We’ve moved my mom back and fourth and this last time the calling and changing the address went smoother. I hope this process becomes easier because we plan on her being around awhile and the “Gaurdian” does give us some peace of mind.

    Haven’t had the M A too long but I did find when I called for my monthly check=up call it too some time before someone answered. Since it was my first time I may have not pushed the right buttons. Will check again the 1st of October.

    These folks have been fabulous in helping us get set-up with Medical Guardian from the first encounter! My 96 year old, paraplegic dad was reluctant to wear the lanyard until I told him to consider it “dog tags” for WWII servicemen. But, after wearing it a couple of day, he inadvertently sent the alarm (leaning over in his wheelchair to pick up pecans!)

    After that first “false alarm”, he was too proud to use it, and later that day had a sincere emergency when his wheelchair collapsed. Yikes!! This was a bad judgement call on his part!
    Since that “trial run”… He is more amenable to use the fantastic resources of Medical Guardian!!

    Was hoping I would never have to use it but I did. It worked great and I had help in just a few minutes. Everything was dark but the paramedics had no problem getting in and finding me. Now I have confidence in the system.

    I chose the Home Guardian for my dad a month ago. So far, he has not had to use it. I was impressed with the customer service when I ordered it. The rep was very kind and explained how the system worked, explained the 4 models they offered and how they were different from each other. He made it easy to make a decision. He answered my questions promptly and thoroughly. Once we received the product, we plugged it in and called the toll free # to test it out. Everyone was very friendly and very easy to understand. If dad every needed to use it in an emergency, I would feel confident that help would be called right away.

    The Medical Guardian staff member helping me activate my new Medical Guardian service was patient, knowledgable, and extremely helpful. She answered all of my questions and made sureI was very comfortable with the system and how it worked, as well as how to test the system monthly. I feel much more comfortable when I go upstairs to bed each night. I am so glad I have my Medical Guadian system in place to provide me with assistance whenever I might need help.

    Ordered it for my Mom and she has not yet needed to use it but after a month of having it we did the monthly test and discovered that the Pendant was not working. They shipped out a new one immediately. Make sure you test it monthly – glad we did.
